Color & Type

In Fall 2022, a new Special Topics Course was delivered combining color theory and techniques for the professional practice of graphic/information design.

Color & Type is a lecture course that examines color with typography through theory and application of generative processes. Students explore the subjects with Processing, an open source language for designing generative applications for motion graphics, time-based media, and UX/UI design.

DES465 classes are offered intermittently. They are special topics, made up of three 5-week sessions. In the first session, students are familiarized with the theories of color and its relation to design and art. Josef Albers book, Interactions of Color, is introduced and students create the practical hands-on exercises in a variety of materials. Following, students practice using color with type in formal and experimental ways. In the final session, color studies are created using an open source programming language designed for the visual arts to create color studies with shapes, letterforms, and motion.

Objectives:

  • Learn about color theory for design & art applications

  • Apply color theories to typography in and on color

  • Consider the influence of motion and generative applications to design expression with color and typography

  • Refine critical and analytic design-thinking skills

  • Enhance large group presentation skills
